Biodesign Night is the annual event on the intersection of design, biology and technology. We invite designers, artists, engineers and scientist to share their experience about biodesign, the integration of living organisms in the design process. Here you can meet the frontrunners in the field, interact with likeminded people, and start new collaborations.
What if we could grow clothes from microbes? Or built furniture or buildings from living organisms and tree bark? Replace plastic completely by algae or bacteria? And replace major sources of waste, like plastic and cement, with sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives? At Biodesign Night 2020 we’ll explore the integration of living organisms in the design process.
Biodesign Night 2020 - Growing a long term solution
A changing climate and rapid depletion of resources heighten the urgency to start producing within the planetary boundaries, as humans face the necessity of reshaping their relationship to nature. Clever and feasible new ideas present the prospect of a sustainable future and may provide ways to ease the long-running conflict between economic growth and environmental protection.
During this third edition of Biodesign Night, together with designers, artists, engineers and scientist, we will talk and share experiences about the integration of living organisms in the design process and how to implement these at a bigger scale for more impact. We will listen to pitches of the designers and scientists we should keep an eye on. World renowed fashion designer turned biofabrication pioneer Suzanne Lee will take us with her in how biofabrication is the next industrial revolution and how we can implement the ideas at a commercial scale.
Let’s start growing long-term solutions.
8.00 – 8.10 PM: Opening by BlueCity Lab founder and our host of the evening Emma van der Leest
Why Biodesign and why now?
8.10 – 8.30 PM: Keynote by Suzanne Lee, about how the future is biofabricated and why we should start now.
8.30 – 8.40 PM: Opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
Pitches: the ones to watch
8.40 – 9.10 PM: Talks from various biodesigners about their challenges, what they’re working on and what they need to grow.
With Bob Hendrikx about restoring nature by bringing human nutrients back into the loop-of-life in the most natural way, Lori Goff about how her UnPlastic will change the packaging industry and Pascal Leboucq about the scaling of architecture and a sneak peek of Dutch Design Week 2020/2021.
Panel session: now let's move forward
9.10 – 9.45 PM: Panel discussion about the role of biodesign in the industry and how to implement these ideas at a commercial scale. What are the biggest challenges? What’s been done now? And what is needed to take the next step and move forward?
With amongst others, Cindy Gerhardt, campus Development Director of DSM
9.45 – 9.55 PM: Opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
9.55 – 10.00 PM: Wrap-up by Emma. What’s on the agenda for the rest of the year, dependance location Dutch design Week, Bioneer festival etc.
10.00 – 11.00 PM: (Online) drinks and networking.
